Living in a House!

If you haven't heard yet, Chris and I are home-owners (as of the Wednesday before our wedding).  It started out great with our Dow moving crew (aka a bunch of engineers that don't know how to pack a moving van....who puts a table upside-down and then doesn't put anything else on it?  But they didn't ask me.)  We thought we were so smart in asking for all the appliances to be included in the sale.  This included the washer and dryer.  They sellers didn't blink at the idea.

And now we all know why!

When Chris went to run an empty washer load to clean it out (it was a bit dingy), the water would not drain.  Lots of buckets, tinkering, and a million pieces later my dad told us it was dead and we went out for our first big purchase outside of the house itself.  (and yes this happened the day before my parents were to come for their summer visit.)

About a month ago we started to grow concerned about our dryer.  If wasn't catching any lint, and the clothes weren't really getting "dry".  Chris started to take things apart and after much worry on my end, we replaced the vent hose and we think we're back in business...for now that is.

Well, on Thursday morning of last week (a day before I was to have my in-laws show up for a visit) our dishwasher decided to just not start!  I played with it, Chris took it apart (which did include flipping the breaker a few times) and we were getting worried about having to buy a new appliance so close to the holidays.  Well, my wonder of a father-in-law went to "look" at it Saturday (which is exactly what he did compared to Chris's dismantling; and right after Susan and I handwashed everything that was in it, or course).  All of a sudden we heard it running.  He asked us if that was a good sound and Chris and I said "YES...what did you do???"  He flipped the light switch above it next the the garbage disposal.  This switch now has duct tape over it in hopes of never flipping it again.  And our hundreds of dollar expense has been avoided yet again.  (and this time without even one trip to Home Depot)

So the wonders of being homeowners is just as I said, a wonder.  (And I haven't even mentioned the lawn mower - which we are on #2 and have grass in our back yard half way up my shin it seems all due to a temperamental lawn mower)

Outside of the house I'm doing the whole Algebra I thing and it has it's days.  I took my first "Mental Health Day" on Friday and can't wait to get my full week off at Thanksgiving!!  But in all I'm enjoying teaching and some of the kids have a clue.  Post-Ike is going well for us, as well as the communities around us.  We really do appreciate everyone's thoughts and concerns through that time.  If you look down our street it does seem that we had a bit of a protective shield around us.  (We are where the leaning trees stopped).

Okay, that's all...except my shout out to one of my favorite DGG's!!  Congrats to both Jenny and George and here's to another PIKE/DG wedding in our future!  Miss all of you...(and Youst, get on the ball! - there you go Brooke )

Hurricane IKE!!

So I have officially experienced my first hurricane.  Thursday afternoon and Friday morning was spent boarding up the house.  We had all our downstairs windows covered and the two windows in the front of the house (our bedroom and my closet).  I was baking, cleaning, and getting valuables in order.

We decided to ride out the storm here at our house because we thought it was far enough in-land.  We did okay on the rain front.  I've seen more water in the streets after a long thunder storm.  As far as the wind went, that got scary.  Our whole upstairs shook so bad I slept on the couch in the living room.  A few hours later Chris joined.  The wind started around 6ish and we lost power about 8 or 9 Friday night.  (a lot sooner than a lot of people thought)  The wind did not stop until late Saturday morning.  When we went out to take in the damage a lot of trees were sideways.  We only lost a few in our back yard, and we might need to do some staking on one in the front.  A good amount of people in our neighborhood, and that we know in the area lost some of their roofing and in turn got some pretty bad water damage.  There are a lot of people that lost their ceilings and now have a big mess of soggy drywall and insulation in their rooms.

We feel very fortunate to only have the minor damage we do.  We might also have to replace some fence.  But in all, that is not a big deal.  Our biggest hardship (which we shared with many) was the lack of electricity.  Chris and I both agreed we don't need a lot.  Just something to keep our food cold!  We lost a lot of stuff from our refrigerator.  A good chunk of that was meat from our freezer.

Chris had to work graveyards a few nights this week while we still didn't have power.  Whenever he left I went over to a friend from church's house.  They had a big generator hooked up to her parent's house so they had TV, AC, lights, a microwave.  It was also nice to see other people.

On Tuesday on my way to Amy's parent's, I had to stop by my assistant principal's house to pick up my paycheck.  She just got her electricity back and offered the use of her generator.  It was a god send.  I brought it home Wednesday and started up our fridge.  I wasn't able to save much, but I was so blessed to have it.  Of course around 1 on Thursday we got our power back.  It actually took me going and buying more gas for the generator for the electricity to turn on...but we'll use it for the mower.  (You really don't want to see our back yard...that's what happens when you are sick for two weeks and then get a hurricane so all the gas goes to generators and not your mower.)

I still don't have school until Monday at the earliest.  Chris has been back at work for about half the week.  Some businesses are starting up again, but it's next to impossible to find any good perishable items.  There is a very limited supply of milk, meat, and bread in the area.  I just know we are blessed to have as little damage and already have power.

Please pray for all those who still don't have power and those that have lost their homes to this storm.  There are many that will lose their homes for good.  Thank you too all those who payed for our safety through the storm...it helped...every front yard along our street has a pine tree down, except ours.  It means a lot that we were on the minds of so many.  Oh, and also pray for those in the Mid-west that got hit with the back end of Ike.  My cousin's are one of those that got hit over the weekend and lost power.  Since everyone is down here helping us get power, it looks like they won't get theirs until the beginning of next week at the earliest.

Many people are in need, but many are still blessed.  Be thinking of those that need your help and help when you can.  Chris and I hope to help FEMA today at a P.O.D. site.  See what you can do too.

So yes, it's November 11, and yes, I was at the beach today in shorts and a t-shirt.  Oh, and did I say I went in the water too!  It's days like today that I like being in Texas.  I became a member of a church today.  I'm very excited about that because I've never been a real member of a church family.  I'm already getting to know a lot of the people.

Well, time to watch the Colts try and lose :(
